Setting

Dermatophytoses are very common superficial fungal infections (prevalence of 15–20% in France), most often contagious, and have until now been relatively neglected because they did not pose any particular management problems. In recent years, however, two issues have emerged: on the one hand, extensive, recalcitrant dermatophytoses that are often resistant to antifungal treatments; on the other hand, therapeutic questions, particularly regarding tinea capitis in children, following the abrupt withdrawal from the market of the only antifungal treatment that held a marketing authorization in France. In addition, the epidemiology of these infections has been changing rapidly in recent years owing to major population movements.

Objectives

  • Monitor the epidemiology of dermatophytes, the spread of dermatophyte resistance, and the available therapeutic options
  • Provide expertise in diagnostic tools (antifungal susceptibility testing, sequencing, metagenomics, etc.)
  • Play an advisory role: diagnostic, therapeutic, and preventive recommendations
  • Coordinate national and international research projects
  • Serve as the preferred contact of SFMM for research projects with other scientific societies

To this aim, this section relies on four working groups (Tinea capitis – Onychomycosis –Antifungal Resistance – Zoophilic Dermatophytosis).
